PREVENTION OF VIOLENT EXTREMISM THROUGH ADDRESSING POST –ELECTION RELATED RISKS AND CONFLICT DRIVERS IN MSAMBWENI LOCATION.
MWANAMKE KWANZA (WOMEN FIRST)
Electoral processes are a means of regulating and deciding political competition. A whole range of issues, including competing viewpoints and priorities, balance of power and decision-making, and allocations of resources, are affected by the outcomes of electoral processes. Given the critical nature of these issues, electoral processes are usually highly competitive. In most cases this competition is resolved through the electoral process itself and the acceptance of results by the competing parties. In other cases, the results may not be accepted by the competing parties. Existing and often deep-rooted tensions and grievances may come to the fore or be exacerbated, and, in the worst cases, violence can occur. This risk is particularly high in counties with systemic, longstanding and unresolved grievances, combined with a “winner takes all” approach to competitive politics. Kwale is one of the counties with long-standing grievances on land issues and a long history of social exclusion. Some of the emerging trends on post-election related risks and conflict drivers include domestic violence and family disintegration, youth gangs, and increasing drug abuse now being identified as key causes of conflict by the population. This offers a perfect opportunity for community engagement for long-term sustainable peace in the larger Kwale County.
